Rhinoplasty - Are You Unhappy With the Surgery?

6
A rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon in order to alter the size or shape of a person's nose.
A nose is the central facial feature and its appearance affects the harmony and proportion of the entire face, in how it aligns with all of the other features.
A rhinoplasty is one of the most sought after plastic surgeries.
There are times, however, when the result isn't satisfactory to the patient.
A typical rhinoplasty is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia or a local with sedation.
The patient is usually allowed to go home the same day as the surgery.
The operation generally takes from one to three hours to perform.
It may be an open or closed procedure.
An open procedure includes an incision under the nostrils and allows the surgeon full view and easier access to the cartilage and bones in the nasal cavity.
A closed procedure would be fully carried out via the nostrils.
During the procedure, segments of bones and cartilage are removed and rearranged.
The bones, which are in the upper portion of the nasal region, are often broken and maneuvered into the appropriate position.
Due to the swelling that naturally occurs, an exact result is difficult to predict.
A surgeon will sometimes err on the side of conservatism.
Sometimes it's best to perform the majority of the operation, such as making the bridge narrower, and wait for healing to occur before deciding whether to alter another portion.
The end result may be fully satisfactory, or the patient may opt to come back for a second surgery, such as one to reduce the width of the nostrils, as well.
It's difficult to gauge the final result until all swelling has subsided, which can take as long as one to two years.
Another thing to consider is that a patient may be unhappy with their new nose simply because they haven't adjusted to it.
They may be so accustomed to disliking their old nose, that they haven't allowed their "new" image to soak in.
It is wise to wait one to two years before deciding whether their nose is truly unsatisfactory or if it's just an adjustment issue.
If a repeat rhinoplasty due to an unsatisfactory result is truly needed, it is important to select a surgeon with expertise in repeat procedures.
Communication is essential in order to let the doctor know what results you are expecting.
Viewing "before and after" photos is a great way to clear up any communication gap that may occur.
