Actos Can Cause Cancer of the Bladder

42
Takeda Pharmaceutical brand for pioglitazone, Actos, is an insulin sensitizer for the Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Actos bladder cancer prompted France and Germany to withdraw it from the market. In the United States, however, Actos was permitted to be sold in the market with a warning label on the bladder cancer or the bladder tumors.

There are two types of diabetes mellitus that are medically known at present. When a human body lacks insulin, he is suffering from Type 1 diabetes which can be cured by the introduction of insulin through injection. Drugs are formulated for conducive cellular sensitivity to insulin or for heightened insulin secretion to cure Type 2 diabetes, a disease which causes cells to resist insulin. The derivative compounds of thiazolidinediones attempt to hamper this second type of diabetes.

Thiazolidinediones (TZD) is a drug approved only for the use against type 2 diabetes. To address the cure for this type of disease, three drugs were formulated from this compound, namely: Rosiglitazone (Avandia), Pioglitazone (Actos) and Troglitazone (Rezulin). Eventually recalled from the US market due to risks to cardiovascular illness was the drug Avandia, a GlaxoSmithKline-manufactured product. Sold and formulated by Parke-Davis was Rezulin and which was subsequently withdrawn from the market due to its risks to hepatitis. Due to the recall of Avandia and Rezulin, Actos rose up as the main medication for diabetic patients which led Actos to place as a bestseller in the medical market.

Takeda Pharmaceutical conducted a study regarding the likely connection of Actos to bladder cancer. In September 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration conducted a review of the pioglitazone drug in response to the study made by Takeda.

While not banned by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the bladder-cancer suffered by Actos consumers have become a popular cause for various complaints against the pioglitazone drug. The dangerous effects of Actos surfaced as it spread among diabetes patients. Actos's grossed its sales in the previous years. Hence, Actos had reached a high level of prescriptions for the diabetic patients. As an expected consequence, their are number of complaints accumulated for the Actos bladder cancer.
