How to Make a Toggle Clasp
- 1). Cut a piece of 20-gauge wire 8 to 10 inches long with the wire cutters.
- 2). Place the center of the wire on the mandrel. A mandrel is any cylindrical object used to form wire into a circle. A ring mandrel or any cylindrical object such as a pen, marker or the handle of a tool works. Form the wire into a circle and remove the circle from the mandrel.
- 3). Form a wire wrapped loop at the base of the circle. Hold the circle with one hand, grasp either tail of the wire with the round-nose pliers and bend that tail at a right angle to the circle. Reposition the pliers to grasp the wire approximately 1/4 inch away from the bend just made and bend the wire in a right angle, forming a U-shaped bend. The wire tail will lie parallel to the circle.
- 4). Grasp the wire in the U-shaped bend with the round-nose pliers, with one jaw in the bend and one jaw on the wire tail. With your fingers, bring the tail of wire around the jaw of the pliers, forming a circle above the U-bend. Reposition the pliers if necessary to form a complete circle around the jaw of the pliers with the wire tail again placed parallel to the large circle.
- 5). Grasp the small circle with the flat-nose pliers. Use your fingers or round-nose pliers to wrap the tail of wire extending from the small circle around the upright portion of the U-bend. Make two complete wraps, leaving room on the upright portion for wraps added during the final step of making the toggle. Clip the wire close to the wraps and tuck in the end with the flat-nose pliers.
- 6). String beads on the other tail of wire, filling in the circle. Grasp the small wire-wrapped circle with the flat-nose pliers and make two wire wraps beneath the wraps on the created in the previous step. Clip the wire close to the wraps and tuck in the end with the flat-nose pliers. The toggle is now complete.
- 1). Cut a piece of wire approximately 6 inches long. Grasp the center of the wire with the tip of the round-nose pliers and make a circle approximately 1/4-inch across, with wire tails extending to either side. Grasp the circle with the flat-nose pliers, hold the tails with your other hand and make a twist with the wire tails. Adjust the tails if necessary to extend to either side of the circle.
- 2). Place beads on one wire tail of the bar to the desired length. It may be necessary to try different bead sizes to make the bar the correct length.
- 3). Make an eye loop at the end of the bar. Grasp the wire with the tip of the round-nose pliers close to the last bead. Make a right angle bend in the wire. Grasp the wire just past the bend with the tip of the round-nose pliers, rotate your wrist and create a small circle in the wire. Cut the excess wire with the wire cutters. Use the flat-nose pliers to tuck in the clipped end and the round-nose pliers to adjust the loop.
- 4). Finish the other side of the bar with the same number of beads and create another eye loop. Adjust the bar to straighten the legs if necessary.
