Light Effects for a Night-Time Photo
- Light trails are created when shooting a moving object with a light on it while keeping the aperture open for several seconds. This type of effect is achieved when shooting traffic on a highway, an airplane in the sky or a boat moving across the water. This effect can also be made by someone running around with multicolored lights while the shutter of the camera is open. Longer shutter speeds are also used when shooting fireworks.
- Painting is a technique in photography where the subject is painted with the light of a flashlight or other artificial light source. This technique is used to light up specific subjects or parts within the frame, while keeping the background dark. To create a painted photo have the subject pose within the frame, turn the flashlight on and move it over the area of the frame you want lit up while the shutter is open.
- Star filters are available in four, six and eight point that are attached to the end of the camera’s lens to turn all points of light into a star. Stars in the sky can be used as natural light sources to create star trails. When shooting star trails use a camera with a bulb setting and a tripod. Open the shutter for 30 thirty minutes to one hour to capture the path of stars as they move across the sky.
- Just after a rain is a good time to shoot photos at night. The rain acts as a natural lighting effect as it reflects and illuminates both natural and artificial lights. Shooting rain photographs at night works best for cityscapes, airports and other scenes with bright lights.
