18th Century Bedrooms
- Stylish bedrooms of today do not compare to the bedrooms of old.interior a bedroom image by Leonid Nyshko from Fotolia.com
Although the 21st century may come with plenty of modern appliances that make daily life easier, it does not compare to the 18th century in timeless sophistication and class. The heavy, stylish look of 18th century bedrooms cannot be found in a modern furniture store today, and the hand-crafted beds and dressers far surpass a factory model in quality. To achieve the look of an 18th century bedroom, look for basics such as quality furniture, heavy fabrics and regal paint colors. - Long before formica and plastic-coated metal, there was simply wood, and in an 18th century bedroom, you could be sure to find a four poster bed made from heavy oak or something similar. The dramatic and royal look of a four poster bed is sure to make it the centerpiece in any bedroom and was a popular choice in the 18th century.
This type of bed could be quite elaborate, with carvings and designs running up and down the posts and a fancy overhead piece with curtains draping down the sides, or relatively simple. For a simpler look, choose plain wooden posts and skip the curtains. The effect will be just as authentic. - The tall boy, a large storage piece that contains many shelves or drawers, is unique to the 18th century and has been mostly replaced by built-in closets. While a dresser and bed can still be found in bedrooms today, pieces like the tall boy are uniquely old-fashioned and will lend an air of authenticity to your 18th century look. Use a tall boy to store items such as linens, towels and bedding.
- Dark, dramatic walls were a mainstay of the bedrooms of yesteryear. These walls were often covered in wood -- or made entirely of wood -- and offered a cozy, comforting feeling when you walked into the bedroom. Other options include dark, heavy paint colors and elaborate patterns, as well as intricate molding designs.
