Instructions on How to Install a Granite Counter Top
- 1). Measure the tops of the cabinets from front to back and side to side. Cut 1/2-inch thick medium density fiberboard, or MDF, sheets with a circular saw to fit the tops of the cabinets. This gives the granite slab more support over the cabinet centers and it also helps to distribute the weight of the granite among the cabinets.
- 2). Set the plywood on the cabinets. Use a carpenter's level to ensure the plywood is level from front to back and side to side. Add wood shims under the plywood as necessary to level the surface of the plywood.
- 3). Secure the MDF to the cabinets with screws long enough to pass through the plywood and into the wood of the cabinets. Place screws along the front and back walls of the cabinets as well as along the sides. Countersink the screws so they all sit below the surface.
- 4). Bring the granite slab into the room. Plan to have plenty of help available because it is heavy. Dry fit it to make sure everything is going to fit properly.
- 5). Insert a tube of silicone caulking into a caulk gun. Snip the tip off the glue cartridge.
- 6). Raise the granite off the countertop far enough to run some caulking under it. Place some dots of caulking about 18 inches apart in the center of the area and put a bead of caulking along the front, back and side edges of the countertop installation. Set the granite back in place.
- 7). Put strips of painter's tape parallel to any seams. Keep the tape within 1/8 inch of the seam. Mix epoxy according to package directions. Work the epoxy into the seam with a wood craft stick. Smooth the surface and wipe off any excess. Allow the epoxy to dry. Remove the painter's tape. Skip this step if your granite countertop doesn't have a seam.
- 8). Wipe the granite clean with a soft, damp cloth. Allow the granite to dry overnight. Apply granite sealer according to package directions. Let it dry. Buff the granite to a shine with an old terrycloth towel.
