Michael Connelly - The Drop Book Review

52
In The Drop, Michael Connelly brings back his favorite character, Harry Bosch. At the start, the surly, dogged investigator has been notified that he has three years left until he must retire and he has never been hungrier for cases.  In one morning he has two thrown at him, one:  a murder from 1989 which has suddenly uncovered more evidence and another which involves his former commanding officer Irvine Irving, whose son has supposedly committed suicide, jumping from a hotel balcony. As he pursues both cases he discovers they are intertwined with a long dark history.

When the crime lab identifies the DNA of a killer, Clayton Pell, from a 1989 murder, the discrepancy is apparent when it reveals that Pell would have been only eight years old at the time. This throws the entire crime lab's credibility into question, which would thus bring all court rulings in the last decade into question. Bosch is led to Dr. Hannah Stone, a sex therapist who is treating Clayton Pell and they investigate together – and get romantically involved too. The book also delves a little into Bosch's budding relationship with his teenage daughter, Maddie, who now lives with him, and reveals that she too, would like to be a cop.

At the same time, Bosch and his partner, David Chu, are also investigating the apparent suicide of George Irving, a case which has the potential to cause political chaos, and as Bosch investigates Irving's work he finds that his wife is holding back. The problems mount as Bosch discovers that someone is leaking all their progress to the press. The added spice to all this is that Irving and Bosch have been clashing for years, and any political mess would be implicating Irving, which is an added cause for tension. As the coroner reveals slight marks on the shoulder of the victim, evidence of a choke hold and suggesting that George Irving had died before he'd fallen to the sidewalk, Bosch recalls a division that specialize in this method of killing, thus opening a political can of worms. The story picks up pace as Bosch discovers the cases are intertwined.

The Drop by Michael Connelly was a classic Bosch book; slow paced, but always gripping and informative. The Drop also includes some very good personal aspects, with Bosch's quarrelling with Irving, his relationship with his daughter, Maddie, and the budding relationship with sex therapist, Dr. Hannah stone. It also stresses the integrity between working partners and not allowing oneself to be dictated to by the politics. All in all Michael Connelly's The Drop is an absorbing read.
