How to Dress for Small Claims Court
- 1). Wear business attire. Men should wear dress slacks and a nice shirt. A tie is optional but recommended. Women should wear a nice outfit such as a skirt and shirt or dress pants and a nice shirt. The way you dress should show respect for the proceedings and the judge.
- 2). Choose neutral colors. Navy blue, black, khaki, dark brown and white are safe options. While bright colors are permitted, they may make you seem less professional.
- 3). Leave your hat and sunglasses at home. Most courts will make you take these items off before you enter the courtroom. Dress hats are included in this rule.
- 4). Pick comfortable shoes that compliment your outfit. Keep in mind that you may have to do a lot of standing. Very high heels or tight shoes will make you uncomfortable. Open toe shoes are forbidden in some courts.
- 5). Keep in mind that revealing outfits or inappropriate attire will probably get you kicked out of small claims court. If you think someone will get the wrong idea from your outfit, change into a new outfit.
- 6). Apply subtle makeup. Too much makeup may make you look like a circus clown. Some judges will think that this shows disrespect for the court.
