Photo Display Clip Board Home Décor for Scrapbookers

Nearly all scrapbookers love taking photos. We take many, many more pictures than we can easily display on scrapbook pages and in albums. Creating ways to decorate our homes with photo displays allows us to not only use more of our pictures but also to display them where friends and family can enjoy them everyday. These Photo Clip Boards are quite literally boards. They are pieces of pine board that you can cover with scrapbook paper and turn into a photo display that can be quickly changed whenever you want to rotate out the photos.

You do not need any wood-working ability and the supply list includes things that you can pick up at your local hardware or all-in-one store (i.e. Super Target, Wal-mart, Meijer). This project also makes a great gift idea for Mother's Day or Father's Day. The finished project would be perfect for display at home or in your office.

Supplies Needed:
  1. 2-6 Feet of 1 x pine board - 1 x 6 is used for the sample.
  2. Sand paper.
  3. Patterned scrapbook paper - coordinating pieces in different prints to cover the boards.
  4. Mod Podge or other liquid paper glue and a foam paint brush.
  5. Small clips and short screws (shorter than the thickness of the board) with a head large enough to not go through the hole in the clip - size 6 x 1/2" wood screws were used on the sample.
  6. Picture Hangers with small nails - small sawtooth hangers used on sample.
  7. Furniture protector bumpers - 3/8 inch self-stick used on sample. (optional)
  8. Small, simple embellishments for the completed boards.
  9. Other tools - Phillips screw driver, hammer, picture hanging nails.

    To Get Started:

    1) Select and Cut the Wood Squares: Select the wood that you will be using. Pine boards are inexpensive and easy to work with. Pine is a "soft" wood making it easy to screw and nail into without pre-drilling. At your local home improvement store select a piece of 1 inch thick pine board that is the width that you desire for your squares. I used a length of 1 x 6. Since wood measurements are taken before the wood is planed, the actual measurements of my 1 x 6 board are 3/4 inch thick by 5 3/8 inch wide.

Using the 5 3/8 inch width as my guide, I marked the board every 5 3/8 inches and cut it into squares using a mitre saw. If you do not have a saw or wood-working skills, you can ask them to cut the board for you at the store. Most places do the first couple cuts for free and then charge a nominal fee (50 cents) per cut after that.

    2) Sand the Board: Use a piece of sand paper to sand the cut edges of the board. The boards do not have to be sanded very much if you desire a more rustic appearance for your project.
    3) Ink the Edges: To "finish" the edges of the wood squares, you can choose to either paint them or ink them. If you decide to ink the edges, you will want to dab the ink pad down the length of the board edge. If you drag the ink pad on the board, the roughness of the wood may damage your ink pad. Continue dabbing until you have inked all four edges of each square with as much depth of color as desired.
    4) Cover the Wood Squares with Patterned Paper: Select a coordinating set of patterned paper that you want to use to cover the wood squares. Trim the paper to the exact size of the front of the board. Cover the wood in a thin coat of liquid glue using a foam brush. Rub the paper gently into the glue and allow to dry.
    5) Add a Picture Hanger to the Back: Add a sawtooth hanger to the back of each wood square. Be sure that each hanger is centered along the top back edge of each square.
    6) Add Bumpers: Place a rubber bumper in the bottom, back two corners of the wood square as shown. Rubber, self-adhesive bumpers will help the wood squares hang evenly on the wall. You can find these bumpers by the picture hanging supplies at the store. The package that I purchased says that they are "Great For: Stereos, VCRs, Picture Frames - Prevents movement on hard surfaces!"

Follow these steps to complete your photo clip boards:

    7) Add the Clip: Small silver clips are added to the front of the board to hold your photos. The easiest way to place these clips is to measure and find the center of the board and then measure down from the top edge so that each clip is in exactly the same spot on the board. When you find the spot, use a small nail to create a pilot hole where you will be screwing down the clip.

The screws will go easily into the wood to hold the clip in place.
    8) Embellish the Boards: To complete the photo clip boards add any small embellishments that you wish to the front of the boards. Keep in mind that most of the space will be taken up with whatever photos you wish to display. You may want to place simple embellishments in the corners. You could also use ribbon, more patterned paper, flowers, or other embellishments.
    9) Hang Up the Display: Small items such as these photo clip boards look nicer in groups. Consider hanging them in a set of four as shown here, or in a horizontal or vertical row in an odd number (3, 5, or even 7) down a hallway.
