8 Things we Considered before starting our home business

30
Starting a business from your home is a challenge to carefully consider. It is a totally different mindset for many people. Once in a while success will happen by accident, but that usually ends in failure. It must be carefully thought out and methodically worked completely or it will collapse from lack of foundation.

We decided to start a home based business - something to avoid the commute, the office environment, corporate image dress code, all of it. Remember, the internet is the model for the new economy, and that is where we decided to start. Internet marketing is a new and challenging career. We were determined to break the debt cycle.

These should be just a start for consideration:

1) Establish both short term and long term goals.
2) What you can afford to invest.
3) Where will the center of the business activity be located?
4) What can you devote to the project from available time?
5) In your investigation, make sure that whoever you deal with, they furnish above adequate training
6) Seek advice from others that you know are already in business at home
7) Legal advice is paramount for this. Remember the IRS.
8) Realize this is no get-rich-quick gimmick; this is a business; your business. - It takes work and devotion. What you do will depend on how much you really want the freedom of working for yourself.

Decide what part of the house you can use without too much confusion and family interruption. Remember, you will have equipment, i.e. desk, file cabinet, phone, computer, and above all, a quiet place to work. (We know of a policeman that intentionally worked swing-shift and worked on his kitchen table after work while the family was in bed, asleep. He was determined to retire early, and he did - years early).

You have probably made up your mind to work with the computer - now what type of business is you interested in? Now is the time to be specific. Realize that you are not fully educated in your dream, so make sure you have available training and where it will come from. Now is not the time for self-education success and failure testing!

Where is the money coming from? How much will you need? Can you get the help from a bank or a credit union? Who will control all of this for you? Decide on the Special business Credit cards and learn how to use them.

Decide on a business name - and register it. Write your business plan including a blue print, a mission statement, business product description and your customer desired description.

If you plan to hire employees, then get your employee identification number (EIN). Your Decision time - do all of this solo, or hire employees. If this is a new challenge, I highly recommend you deal with this separately. Ask for advice - ask someone that is already doing it.

Record keeping - consider the electronic means of communication storage to see if this will work for you. Also, who does it? Ask for advice unless you already know.

Make listing of equipment needed and training to use it. Telephone type (cell or landline) and what you will need. Detail plan what computer, screen, keyboard and printer(s) needed. How much long distance calling charges is involved?

Organize the house - Organize yourself as well. Calendar, planner, white board, record storage, essential lighting etc.

Make it well known to friends and neighbors you will be operating a business, and have almost no extra time for the social hour. Establish your hours of operation, and stick with it.
Creating and operating a home business is a wonderful and rewarding challenge. The satisfaction is not only in the money earned, but in doing what makes you happy.
