The Best Trout Fishing Soft Lure Baits
- Bass anglers understand the benefits of soft bait, but many anglers overlook soft bait when going after trout. Soft bait comes in many different types, and is an alternative to live bait. Most soft bait imitates its live counterpart both movement and looks. Soft bait is easy to store and is more durable than live bait.
- Rubberized soft bait comes in a variety of types from worms to cut fish that resembles the live versions. When selecting a type of soft bait for trout remember what kind of live bait attracts trout and buy that type of soft bait. Shad, minnows and nightcrawlers work well. Soft bait comes in standard solid form and in a "swim bait" form that moves like live fish in the water. Combine either type of rubber soft bait with "blood," available in tubes, which makes the bait look like a wounded live fish and will attract trout seeking prey.
- Another type of soft bait, although less attractive than manufactured rubber soft bait, actually comes from live sources. Chicken liver is excellent soft bait that carries its own blood scent. Chicken liver disintegrates quickly on the hook and must be prepared properly. It is always used raw, but you should wrap it in a piece of fish netting to keep it from melting right off the hook.
- Freeze dried bait is another version of soft bait that comes from a real source, and yet combines some of the appeal of manufactured bait. Look for freeze-dried bait at any store that sells fishing supplies and bait. Freeze dried bait comes in packages, and will keep for a long time if the package isn't opened. The biggest drawback to freeze dried live bait is that this type of bait is not as durable as rubberized soft bait.
