School Grants for Low-Income Families
- The U.S. Government provides the Federal Pell Grant to provide assistance to college bound individuals. The grant is need-based, with preferential considerations toward low income undergraduate students and certain post-baccalaureate students. Grant amounts are dependent upon the student's expected family contribution, tuition costs, enrollment status, and whether or not the student will be attending classes for the full academic year or less. The maximum award amount is $5,550.
- The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is another program supported by the U.S. Government. This program is for undergraduate students who seek to enter post-secondary schools. There are roughly 4,000 post-secondary institutions participating in this program throughout the United States. Students who have been approved for the Pell Grant and have very low family contributions are welcome to apply for the FSEOG. Funding amounts range between $100 and $4,000 per academic year.
- The Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship Program provides funds to families with an established financial need. Eligible students must have at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must also be attending a four-year institution to be considered for this award. Verification of financial need is required. Income limitations are outlined in a chart on the grant maker's website. Funding from this program can be up to $1,500.
- The G.I. Bill assists veterans of the U.S. Armed forces to defray costs of higher education. Funding amounts differ according to the length of your military service. The G.I. Bill can be combined with the Pell Grant or any other forms of assistance you may be qualified to receive. Along with tuition costs, the G.I. Bill provides a monthly housing allowance as well as a stipend for books and other supplies. The bill pays for up to 36 months of education benefits. Funds are available for 15 years following release from active duty.
