Nirvana at Bodhgaya Bihar

Bodh Gaya, Bihar is the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centre in the world; a place where Lord Buddha left his foot steps nearly 2500 years ago while traveling in the quest of enlightenment. It was here under a Bodhi tree that Gautama attained supreme knowledge to become Buddha,the Enlightened One. The town is also home to dozens of Buddhist monasteries.

The Major Bodhgaya pilgrimage attractions are:

Mahabodhi Temple- It is one of the four holy sites related to the life of the Lord Buddha. The construction uses the styles of Dravidian Architecture; it is a UNESCO World heritage site. Here one can find records of the events that are associated with the life of Gautama Buddha, and also of the subsequent events. It boasts of a 52 m tall spire that houses the colossal image of Lord Buddha. It is said that the image is 1700 years old and positioned in a manner that Lord Buddha faces the east.

Bodhi tree- It isactually a fig tree, which grew from the original tree under whose kind shelter Lord Sakyamuni meditated and ultimately attained enlightenment. Owing to this, he became Buddha. Bodhi Tree is a significant part of Bodh Gaya, which is believed to grow on the day, Gautama Buddha was born. Under Bodhi tree, there is a platform embracing the footprints of Lord Buddha carved in stone. Close to it is a slab of red sandstone which marks the spot where the Lord sat in meditation.

Ratnagar- Is a small shrine nearby the Mahabodhi temple and the Bodhi tree. It is believed that the Buddha spent one week here, while five colors coming out of His body. A home to numerous temples and monasteries, the place is a sacred place for the Buddhists from all over the world.

Tibetan Monastery- The monastery houses a huge dharmachakra (wheel of law) which is 10 meter high metal drum in golden and red color and they say one can be free of all the sins committed, if one spins the wheel three times continuously from left to right. The monastery also consists of an image of Maitreya Buddha, which is believed to be the future incarnation of the Buddha. The monastery is decorated with Tibetan scriptures, thangkas and other Buddhist symbols and objects.

Also do not miss Bodhgaya Archaeological Museum which contains a large collection of Buddha statues, in terracotta and stone. Other artifacts, including stone carvings, also figure in the museum's display.
