How to Replace Automotive Screws
- 1). Insert either the Phillips head or flathead screwdriver into the screw you want to remove, depending on what type of head the screw is. It's critical that the screwdriver is the right size for the screw, so if it feels loose in the slot, step up to another size.
- 2). Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the screw. If the head is stripped and you can't get the screw loose, proceed to the next step.
- 3). Place the channel locks onto the head of the screw. Clamp the channel lock onto the head of the screw and try to turn it counterclockwise. If you can't turn the screw or the vice grips won't clamp on, proceed to the next step.
- 4). Insert a metal drill bit into the center of the drill. The screw extractor will list the size of drill bit that's required to get the extractor to do its job.
- 5). Insert the drill into the head of the screw and drill out the center. You want the drill bit to start to eat out the center of the screw.
- 6). Insert the screw extractor into the drill and set the drill on reverse.
- 7). Use the drill to turn the screw extractor and remove the screw. This will get it out of the hole completely or break it in the process. Either way, the goal has been accomplished.
