Golden Jubilee Naval Salute
The Royal Navy celebrated Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee with a pageant of warships.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations were held in various locations during the summer of 1887, and perhaps the most impressive was the great gathering of the British fleet at Spithead, in July 1887.
Queen Victoria attended, aboard the royal yacht. And it was estimated that 30,000 spectators, aboard boats in the harbor, witnessed a spectacular display of naval power.
The Royal Navy assembled a fleet of 135 warships.
As the royal yacht sailed past on July 23, 1887, each ship fired guns in salute. That evening there was an enormous display as the ships fired rockets into the air.
