How to Measure Oxygen Saturation & Carbon Dioxide Concentrations
- 1). Connect the Airway Adaptor Tubes to the Pulse Oximeter and carbon dioxide detector and position the sensor to the patient by clipping it to a finger.
- 2). Press the On/Off switch on the Pulse Oximeter and carbon dioxide detector to turn it on.
- 3). Ensure that the set up of Pulse Oximeter and carbon dioxide detector has been done correctly by checking if pulse quality indicator is flashing green and correlating to the pulse rate for ten seconds.
- 4). Check to see if the airway adapter tube is properly attached to the CO2 sensor and the sensor is properly attached to the Pulse Oximeter and carbon dioxide detector. If so, the CO2 display will be illuminated.
- 5). Attach the CO2 sensor to the patient's endotracheal tube or have them put it into their mouth and blow out, to reflect appropriate values for each breath.
- 6). Look for the patients oxygen saturation percentage on the screen that is titled "%SpO2".
- 7). Look for the patients carbon dioxide concentrations on the display that is marked "CO2". This display will only be activated when the patient is breathing into the air tube.
