The Plight of An Anxious Youngster In this day and age I'm pretty certain you'll agree that anxiety is an integral part of living, that every one of us has experienced some form of stress and anxiety at different times in our lives, that each of us knows what it's like to be anxious, stressed out, and sometimes even afraid.
To varying degrees young children also experience stress and anxiety - but the difference between a young child and an adult when it comes to dealing with anxiety is, most adults are able to deal with their stress, manage their anxious emotions, and have learned to get on with their life in spite of them.
Youngsters have yet to learn how to do this..
Youngsters Suffering From Anxiety Usually Have Trouble Coping.
.
Not realizing it feasible for youngsters (so new to the world) to be burdened by stress and anxiety, parent sometimes overlook their child's anxiety and, thinking the child will grow out of it, put it down to juvenile behavior.
Unfortunately when this happens it can present an enormous challenge, to both parent and child, because when overlooked during the formative years, the anxiety can escalate and continue on into adulthood.
And this becomes apparent when a youngster begins developing social phobias, such as intense shyness, obsessive thoughts, addictive behavior, etc.
which is why classmates at school can have a tendency to avoid anxious children.
Something else that's known to intensify erratic, anxious behavior in a child is when a well-meaning teacher or counselor, noticing the erratic behavior, steps in and attempts to calm the child down.
Often this will have the reverse effect, triggering the child's 'fear alert' and causing their behavior to worsen.
For these children their anxiety is significantly more intrusive compared to the occasional rush of anxiety pretty much all children experience from time to time.
This is why when the anxiety symptoms aren't recognized during the early phases of development, youngster's social and academic capabilities are usually affected, making it extremely difficult for them in later life to manage careers and relationships.
When Extreme Anxiety Overwhelms A Child..
Although severe anxiety is not all that common in children (approx.
13 out of 100 children experience high-level anxiety during their developing years), it is a condition that can be extremely difficult for parents to come to terms with.
That's why it is imperative for parents to recognize the symptoms in their child early on.
That way, when their child is overwhelmed by stressful emotions, and their behavior becomes erratic, they will know that the behavior is not rebellious or attention seeking.
