Example Problems for Mean and Median:

Mean:

Definition:

In statistics, the mean is defined as average of the given values.

Example 1:

The age of 5 students are 15, 18,21,17,10.

Solution:

Step 1:

The given values are 15, 18,21,17,10.

Formula for mean = `("Sum of the given values")/("Number of given data")`

As the first step, we will find the sum of the given values.

Sum of the given values = 15 + 18 + 21 + 17 + 10.

= 81

We got the total as 81.

Step 2:

As the second step, now we will find the average of the given values.

In this example, we have 5 values, so divide by 5.

Number of given data = 5.

= `81/5`

= 16.2

So, the mean value is 16.2.

Median:

In statistics, the median is defined as medium value.

Example of Median:

The marks of 7 students in English exam are 75,89,84,60,52,34,50.

Solution:

The given values are 75,89,84,60,52,34,50.

Step 1:

To find the median value, we need to sort the given elements in ascending order.

Sorting the given elements in ascending order.

34,50,52,60,75,84,89.

Step 2:

In this ascending order, we have a middle value.

The middle value is 60.

Median = 60.

Example problems for Mode and Range:

Mode:

In statistics, the mode is defined as repeated values in the given data.

Example of |mode:

The given values are 45, 36,70,14,45,42,45,60.

Solution:

Step 1:

The given values are 45, 36,70,14,45,42,45,60.

Some of the values are repeated values in the given set.

Step 2:

The ‘45' is occurred 3 times, so the mode value is 45.

Mode = 45.

Range:

In statistics, the meaning of range is a difference between the highest value and the small value.

Formula for range = Largest value - small value.

Example of range:

The given values are 148, 32,75,65,32. Find the range?

Solution:

Step 1:

The given values are 148, 32, 75, 65,100.

As a first step, we need to find a largest value.

Here we have the largest value is 148.

Step 2:

As a second step, we need to find the small value.

The small value is 32.

Step 3:

Now we substitute the highest value and small value in the range formula.

The range formula is,

Range = Largest value - small value.

= 148 - 32.

= 116.

We got the range value as 116.

Range = 116.
