How to Granite Floor Tile a Countertop

    • 1). Go over the whole countertop surface with a power sanding pad to get it flat and dull. Wipe off the dust.

    • 2). Mark a line from front to back in the middle of the countertop, using a pencil and carpenter's square. The line should extend down over the forward edge of the surface.

    • 3). Use your wet saw to cut strips of granite tiles to the height of the front edge of the countertop, which will generally be 2 inches. Spread mortar over the front edge using your notched trowel. Press the granite strips in place beginning at the middle line and working your way outward toward the sides, putting spacers between each of them. Cut the last tiles on the ends to fit as needed.

    • 4). Cover the top of the countertop with mortar, spreading it with your trowel. Press the first row of granite floor tiles in place along the front edge, starting at the center line. Set them so they come out and cover the upward-facing edges of the tile strips that you hung first. Put spacers between the tiles as you lay them. Cut the end tiles on the wet saw as necessary.

    • 5). Build backward from the front, row by row, starting each row at the center line and proceeding outward to the edges. Put spacers between all of them. Cover the whole surface.

    • 6). Let the mortar set for 24 hours. Pull out the spacers.

    • 7). Grout the whole countertop, spreading the grout over it with a grout float, pressing it into the spaces. Let it sit for five minutes, then wipe up the excess grout with a damp sponge. Let the grout set for 48 hours.
