List of Some Reasons Why People Are Afraid of Becoming an Entrepreneur

28

    Fear of Failure

    • Fear of failure is a major fear among people who have thought about starting their own business. Many do not even start because they fear that they will not make it. They fear that perhaps they will make a mistake that will ruin their own business. They also fear that maybe they will not make enough money to make a living. And some are even afraid that they will succeed, then will not be able to keep up with the demand, thus leading to business overload and eventual failure.

    Loneliness

    • Some people cannot deal with the loneliness that many entrepreneurs subject themselves to in the beginning as they work day and night to get their business up and going. Entrepreneurs that work from home by themselves may feel cut off from the rest of the world as they do not have the regular social contact that a day job affords. Many are in in their home office working at growing their business without any contact with others.

    Sobering Statistics

    • New business failure statistics are sobering as some of the numbers are quite high. According to 1999 statistics that "Bloomberg BusinessWeek" reported on, only 39 percent of businesses are profitable over a lifetime while another 30 percent lose money. Although that was in 1999, still many people look at such statistics and automatically place themselves into the percentage of people who lose money or the percentage of new businesses that fail.

    Lack of Stability

    • Unlike a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. job, being your own boss does not afford the same stability. When you work for someone else, you usually get paid every week or two no matter what you did or did not do. You also have a set schedule you must abide by as well as dress and conduct rules at work. Entrepreneurs do not have any of those rules. They set their own rules. For many, this control of their own financial future and lack of structure is scary.
