Dog Recall Training

27
Many dog owners are familiar with the problem of their dog running off at inappropriate times, and either delaying, or even refusing completely, to come back, when called.
Of course, dogs do not do this as apart of some kind of evil plan to annoy their owners, it's simply that an interesting smell, sight or sound catches the dog's attention, and the dog chases after it because it hasn't been taught any better.
Now I am going to pretend that even the best trained dog in the world can't get distracted from time to time, but the point is really that just as there are dog training methods for housebreaking, and obedience training, it also possible to teach your dog the recall - that is to come back right away when called.
I also won't pretend that teaching your dog the recall will happen over night - it's a process that requires some effort and work by both dog owner and dog.
You should also bear in mind that teaching your dog to come back when called, is also important for your dog's safety.
If your dog saw a squirrel across the street, would you want him chasing after it, if doing so involved crossing a busy road? Additionally, safety aside, having to put up with your dog running off all the time can put you under a lot of stress - but conversely, if your dog knows the recall, you can not only have less stress to deal with, you can also build a better and closer relationship with your pet.
