Learn To Make Beats - What You Need To Learn
If you want to make beats you will need to pay your dues.
There are many things you will need to learn.
Since like you I was recently just getting started with this I am going to cover three areas that I feel are really helping me in learning how to make beats.
These three things were ear training, learning how to read music, and knowing how to use your beat making gear.
The first thing that helped me in beat making was training my ear.
In another article I wrote about how listening to beats was very helpful, but in order to do that you need to learn how to distinguish between the different instruments and samples within a song.
The easiest way I have found to do that is to just slow things down.
You can search on the internet for software to slow down songs or re-encode the songs yourself.
There is also software which will supposedly separate different tracks such as rhythm from voice, but in all honest when I tried that stuff out it never seemed to work properly.
The second thing that has really helped me is understanding music and tabs.
I come from a music background, but it is not too difficult to follow tablature and music with a little bit of learning even if you have no experience, and you will find that a lot of music for songs is readily available on the internet and you can use that in making beats.
The third thing is that you really have to know how to use your gear, whether it be software or some fancy equipment.
I suggest starting out simple, but make sure that you can actually make real music with what you are using.
Being able to use your own samples and record beats as you make them is key.
Choosing some complicated software just because it has the most features is not the way to go.
I tried that way, and it just takes too long.
Use something that you can figure out so that you will stay interested then if need be go for the more complex and costly software later on.
If the gear or software you buy for making beats has any instructional material then make sure you go through that before you go searching around the internet for the easy way out.
