Be Careful when using Facebook
For most users, Facebook is a brilliant piece of work, allowing them to connect with old friends and make new ones. There is, however, a dark downside to being active on Facebook, the result of which is making the news headlines more and more.
When making any statement on Facebook, that statement is made in front of a group of people. While it is possible to set your privacy settings to limit the visibility of your updates to your friends, most people don't, and all their comments and updates are there for the world to see.
As such, many people who have made derogatory statements about their employers, spouses, and even acquaintances, have ended up in awkward situations after having made those statements as if in public, in front of a multitude of witnesses without the possibility of retracting it.
When using Facebook, or any other social network, for that matter, it is imperative that one considers the potential consequences of any given statement. If there is any possibility that anyone might take it the wrong way, or turn it into an issue, it is best to refrain from making the statement at all.
Keep in mind that, when engaging in one on one conversation, one has the opportunity to respond if someone else takes a statement the wrong way, or to simply apologize and move on. Unfortunately, making the same statement in public is bound to have some people taking sides against you. Considering the numbers involved, it is quite possible to provoke an enormous reaction without the slightest possibility of being able to manage the responses before you are judged publicly.
Additionally, even with the proper privacy settings in place, there is always the risk of someone in your circle of friends leaking information to someone else who was the topic of discussion. Since it is impossible to know where any person's true loyalty lies when it concerns his or her income, it is best not to gamble with your future and make any statements which can, and probably will be held against you at a later stage.
Some thoughts are just not to be voiced in public, and some are not to be voiced at all. While it is still possible to deny having said something which was aired in a private conversation, it is not possible to do so if you made the statement in front of witnesses, or did so in writing.
