News channels are slowly losing the battle

Pew Research Center's report about the US news media suggests that news channels like MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News lost combined viewership of around 11 percent between 2007 and March 2014. Pew's report also suggests that people are no more interested in even watching prime time news shows on TV. Instead, they prefer to read news while surfing social networking sites.

Many Americans prefer to read news while on the go. They use devices like tablet PCs, and smart phones to visit news sites, social networking sites, or bogs to keep themselves updated with news and current affairs. This is what has triggered the importance of online journalism around the world.

Why do some people prefer online journalism over news channels and news websites owned by news groups?

Online journalism or digital journalism involves creating and publishing content using internet. Online journalism involves creating stories based on current affairs and releasing them in the form of video, text or audio online.

These days, most of the internet journalists use social networking sites along with their news websites to distribute their content. More and more people trust internet journalists because of their content's freshness. In-fact, even news agencies prefer to work with online journalists or freelance journalists in areas where they do not have regional representatives or offices.

The information or news content released by traditional media's services like news websites, TV channels, and print copies of news papers is chosen and released as per the news company editor's preference or choice. While in internet journalism, the content is published as per the journalist's opinion or point of view.

Online journalists play an important role in bringing news stories from Somalia, Syria, Mexico, Pakistan in-front of the world. These and several other African countries do not have presence of major media houses and their representatives due to political instability and ongoing conflicts with terrorists. But internet journalists play an important role in exposing ground reality from these countries in-front of the world.

The content authenticity issue still keeps considerable numbers of readers away from blogs and websites run by online journalists. However, people in certain countries like India trust internet journalists over news channels due to recent scams that exposed nexus between news groups and politicians. News groups were accused of being specific while broadcasting news about leaders from certain political parties.

Can online journalism prove to be good career choice?

One third of America's adult population prefers to watch news videos on the internet instead of watching the same on TV. Pew Research center's recent report about news channels' viewership also indicated that people are using social networking sites as source of news instead of news channels or their websites. This shows that internet journalism can also prove to be good career choice in the coming future.

If you really love to follow news, current affairs, and feel that your investigative skills are superb, you can definitely think about becoming online journalist.
