How to Build a Deer Hunting Ground Blind

52
    • 1). Choose a location to build your ground blind by observing the travel habits of deer during closed season. Look for well-traveled game trails, feeding spots and deer droppings. While it might be appealing to construct a blind in an open area, many bigger game are adapted to staying in the brush. The best spot for a blind is near a bend in the trail, preferably a location already partly concealed by a tree or bush, where you may catch a deer off guard while crossing an open area.

    • 2). Place an open folding chair in the location you have chosen and sit down. This will give you an idea of how high the blind should be to adequately hide the majority of your body. Gather tree limbs and pieces of brush from the area and start to pile them up in a circle, leaving an opening for you to enter the blind. Build the blind high enough to conceal your body, but low enough so that you're still be able to see and shoot out over it. Be careful not to take too much of the natural cover away from the area, as the deer will not use the trail anymore if the cover becomes too sparse.

    • 3). Bring along a camouflage tarp and drape it from a tree over top of the blind, if possible. This will further create the illusion of cover from above and help hide you from any passing deer. A tarp will also protect you from any precipitation or sunlight that could hinder your hunting trip.

    • 4). Clear the floor of your blind of any twigs or garbage. Accidentally stepping on sticks or other items that can create noise will scare away any game that may be passing your blind. Dig a shallow hole in the ground for your feet so you are sitting lower to the ground and will not have to pile up as much cover material. Overall, create a comfortable area for yourself while keeping the blind looking as natural as possible.
