How to Put in Red Highlights
- 1). Choose the desired shade of red dye. Purchase a highlighting hair kit from a local retailer or beauty store.
- 2). Wash your hair with a good clarifying shampoo a few days before highlighting your hair. This process clears out the dirt, natural oils and styling products that build up, while making your hair more receptive to absorbing color.
- 3). Avoid shampooing your hair on the day of highlighting. Allow some of the natural oils to remain to protect the scalp and hair from chemicals.
- 4). Mix the red dye and hair lightener formula in a bowl. Apply the mixture with a thin brush to each section of hair that will be highlighted. Work from the back to the front of the head to avoid getting lightener and dye on your arms.
- 5). Spread the dye mixture evenly from the roots to the ends of the hair. Secure each dyed section using a clip.
- 6). Set a timer to 15 minutes. Rinse out brushes and dispose of unused products while waiting for the dye to set in.
- 7). Remove the clips from your hair.
- 8). Shampoo and condition hair.
