Tools to Use for Shaping and Cutting Craft Foam
- There is more to scissors than straight forward cutting out. Standard craft scissors have very sharp edges and points, and can be used for cutting out most shapes. Precision scissors, which look more like tweezers, come to a very fine point and are designed for very-complicated cut-outs. They come with straight edges, or curved edges that can help with accuracy when cutting out 3-dimensional materials such as craft foam. "Pinking" scissors and wave scissors, create a wavy edge and leave a decorative finish when cutting the edges of foam used for book covers, or picture frames.
- Traditional craft knives look a little like scalpels or surgeons knives with very sharp blades and are ideal for cutting out very detailed outlines from craft foam. Their blades are safer to replace than a surgeon's knife because they are released by unscrewing part of the knife rather than snapping off. Craft knife "pens" which are shaped, as one would expect like a pen, can be easier for some people to manage.
- There are now a great many craft punches on the market for cutting and shaping craft foam. These vary from simple hole punches, to complicated punch out shapes such as angels or flowers. A foam sheet is inserted between the two halves of the punch, which is then pressed together to cut out the shape. Punches are useful if you want to accurately reproduce the same shape over and over again, however some people dislike them because they feel they give a "mass produced" feel to their craft work.
- Craft foam can be softened with heat and stamped or molded into different shapes which it will retain once cooled. Craft heat guns, which are usually powered by electricity or butane, and look like small slim-line hairdryers, can be used to direct a steady flow of heat at sections of craft foam until they become malleable enough to shape as you wish.
