Indestructible Dog Toys - Fact or Fiction?

22
We all see those ads that claim such and such products are indestructible dog toys.
Having a dog, particularly a large one going through it's doggy toddler and teenage years bears witness to a costly devouring of so called indestructible dog toys.
Somehow, no matter what perceived strength of the toy, puppy/dog made a meal of it and then some.
Within a couple of weeks or, at most a month, the toy was an unrecognizable shredded and gnawed mess.
You could not be blamed for thinking that your pooch is related to the wild with a definite bloodline of crunching hyenas.
The strength of the dogs teeth and jaws is something to behold.
Large breed dogs have an almost mystical ability to sink their teeth into anything and the site of the devastation remaining makes you want to go check the car tires and make sure the vehicle is not leaning over on its rims.
This all leads to the question - is there really such a thing as an indestructible dog toy - otherwise known as tough dog toys? Well, the answer to that is - not really.
Depending on your dog, the chances are; that whatever toy with whatever supposed defense advertised to have, will eventually yield to the persistence of a single minded chewing machine.
The fact of the matter is that an indestructible dog toy is really one that is more durable then the rest.
It obviously needs to be made so that it would not harm the dogs teeth.
The real bonus to having purchased an indestructible dog toy is the premise that it will last longer - and they do.
However, you need to look at the costs and make sure you're not investing in a 'fools economy'.
Let's say the normal dog toy lasts two weeks and costs two dollars.
Obviously that is $1 per week of dog enjoyment of obsessive chewing.
Now suppose you buy that tough dog toy - it cost 6 - 3 x as much.
The question then arises as to how long this should last - if it lasts only 6 weeks then you break even and any longer you have an investment in saved money.
The good news is that most indestructible dog toys should last a long while - a relative term really but you can count on three months or more if it's a good product.
Tips on Keeping those Dog Toys Cost Effective and Safe 1.
Have a few toys that the dog enjoys and rotate them.
2.
Choose a toy with rounded edges.
Flat edges are easier for the dog to destroy.
3.
Choose a hardy material such as polyethylene - it's stronger than most.
4.
Keep a check on the condition of the toys.
Make sure they are not breaking up or splintering as this is obviously hazardous to doggy.
5.
Select a toy according to your pooch's play-personality.
Does he like to play tug-of-war? Does he play fetch? If he's a swimmer then obviously get a toy(s) that floats 6.
Make sure the toy is large enough for the dog to avoid him swallowing it.
7.
Avoid easily shedding materials such as rope or anything with stuffing.
8.
For the crazy obsessed chewer dog, get something made of rubber that will not get stripped away easily from the surface of the toy - There are products that have non toxic sealing around the rubber to stop this happening 9.
Have a toy that is easy to clean.
10.
Most importantly, you should try to consistently monitor the condition of the toys.
Follow these tips and you will be able to keep your dog safe and away from the vet with any foreign object obstructions and you'll keep your pet from chewing away your prized possessions and, of course, keep that tail wagging.
Indestructible dog toys are a good bet and will save you money in the long run
