Filing for Child Support in Oregon
- 1). Determine where you need to file. If you receive public assistance in Oregon then you can file through the Department of Justice, Division of Child Support (DCS). Public assistance includes Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid (including Oregon Health Plan Services). If you do not receive public assistance, then you need to file through the district attorney for the county where you live.
- 2). Fill out the form. You can fill out the DCS form online and then print it out to mail or deliver it to the office in person. (See the Resources.) If you need to file at a district attorney's office, you should visit the office in person. (See Resources for a list of Oregon district attorney's offices.) There are people on staff to help you fill out the forms if you need it. You will need to pay $1 to file, but it will be deducted from the first payment collected on your behalf. In order to expedite the monetary collection, you should provide as much information as you have about the other parent.
- 3). Work with your case manager. Once you have filed for support, your case will be assigned to a case support worker. This person will be available by phone and sometimes by email to answer questions related to your case. If you receive additional information about the non-custodial parent, this is who you should contact. Once you've filed the form and received a case worker, you do not need to do anything else. The district attorney will attempt to collect on your behalf and send you the money when it is received. Some counties will place this money in an account and give you a debit-type card to use.
