Video Transcript

You may be looking for some ways to add sea salt or start incorporating sea salt in to your diet as an alternative to regular table salt. I'm Charlotte Lawson, a registered and licensed dietitian here in Tampa Bay, Florida. Now, sea salt has had a lot of buzz lately in the media. Being that supposedly lower in sodium then regular table salts. Well research has actually proven that the amount of sodium is very, very similar. And sea salt maybe a little bit less but it really isn't significant. So, please be careful when trying to use the sea salt in place of table salt. Sea salt's crystals tend to be a little bit bigger because sea salt does have a couple of extra minerals attached to the sodium that's found in the sea salt. So again, the sodium content is still there. Maybe the chloride might not be as much and has some other minerals such as potassium or calcium something. Now again, moderation really is what's key. And if you are looking to lower your overall sodium content in your diet make sure you checking on your processed and packaged foods. Twenty four hundred milligrams of sodium is what is the daily recommended amount. And again sodium comes in a lot of different things, be it from sea salt, table salt or just added in products, or even naturally occurring in some of our foods that we eat. If you read your nutrition facts labels, try to be careful and avoid that high sodium per serving products. Anything under 120 or 140 milligrams is a lower sodium product and probably a good choice. Now, check the nutrition facts labels and be moderate and careful when using any sort of added in salts as a seasoning. I'm Charlotte and eat happy.
