DVD Review: Folding Coin - Coin In Bottle (World"s Greatest Magic)
About.com Rating
As the name implies, "Folding Coin - Coin In Bottle" offers variations on the “coin in bottle” trick and adds a few applications for the gimmicked prop that work beyond the bottle. For anyone who wants to perform this well known trick, this DVD is probably the ultimate on the topic.
Hit the Bottle
This DVD offers versions of “Coin in Bottle” by such notables as Johnny Thompson, Karl Norman, David Roth and Michael Ammar.
It’s indeed nice to watch these pros in action and pick and choose the techniques that can work best in your own routine.
All of the routines allow spectators to examine the coin and you get to see different ways to handle the switches. Some of the artists introduce additional props for misdirection and David Roth’s version offers a second climax where the label on the bottle ends up inside of the bottle. In addition, Ammar offers both close-up and stand-up versions of the effect and instead of using a beer or Coke bottle as the others do, uses a champagne bottle.
Beyond the Bottle
Beyond “coin in bottle,” Roth offers some other applications for the gimmick. He teaches classic “biting a coin,” an effect where the magician appears to bite a coin and by simply blowing on the coin, restores it. In “Magic Mint,” a lone quarter that’s held in the hand is mysteriously joined by a half-dollar. Here, Roth shows an intriguing application with the gimmick.
In “Coins Through Table,” Roth teaches an application for the folding coin that I had never seen before.
The gimmick is used in such a way that Roth appears to have added a coin to his hand but hasn’t. This is brilliant.
Roth’s method is a worthwhile approach to performing “Coins Through Table,” but I have a feeling that the method is more for magicians than lay spectators. When performing “Coins Through Table” on a regular basis, I don’t think that I would want to have to rely on the gimmicked coin and deal with its maintenance. But the method does give a particularly clean and visual “vanish” of the coin as it “passes” through the table.
If you’re interested in performing “coin in bottle,” this DVD is an excellent reference that will allow you to study and learn the effect.
