Degrees of Difficulty

• Some manufacturers make it easy for you to refill your toner cartridge by installing a refill cap. Others build a cartridge that seems as impenetrable as a bank vault. Your local office supply store should be able to advise you as to the availability of refill kits or any special tools you might need for your particular printer.
  
  

Selecting the Proper Kit

• Toner refill kits are available online and from office supply stores. Choose one that matches the make and model of your printer. Newer laser printers will require a reset chip as well as toner. This reset chip counts the number of pages printed and is designed to let you know when your toner is running low before you start printing blank pages.
  
  The refill kit should contain toner, a funnel or pouring cap, and a reset chip.
  
  

Refilling the Cartridge

• Open the printer and remove the toner cartridge. Wear vinyl or rubber gloves while pouring toner. Toner is an extremely fine carbon powder that is difficult to remove from hands and clothing.
  
  Remove the cartridge's fill cap. Place the funnel in the cartridge's fill hole or attach the fill cap to the toner bottle. With the toner bottle inverted, gently tap the sides of the bottle until the cartridge is full. Leave enough room to replace the cartridge's filler plug.
  
  If your toner cartridge has a reset chip, use a screwdriver to remove and replace it with the new chip.
  
  

Replacing the Cartridge

• Hold the cartridge horizontally and gently rock it back and forth as you would for a replacement. Place the cartridge back in the printer and close the access door.
  
  

Refill Limits

• Most toner manufacturers recommend that you not refill a cartridge more than three times before having it reconditioned. Reconditioned cartridges are available for most popular printer models at a price that is significantly lower than new replacements.
