Toyota Tundra Truck Overview

Toyota Tundra

When most consumers think of pickup trucks, Toyota isn't the brand that generally springs to mind. But, since it was first introduced in 2000, the Toyota Tundra has been keeping pace in a market that is typically ruled by American vehicles. In its banner year, the Tundra was nominated as Truck of the Year by Motor Trend magazine, and it again earned this recognition in 2008 post release of the second generation Tundra.

Features

Buyers may choose from three different engines, and there are options for four wheel or two wheel drive. Other options include a five or six speed transmission (there is no manual transmission option for the Tundra, only an automatic transmission is offered). In terms of size, the three options include a basic regular cab model, a roomier double cab with a 5.5 foot truck bed, or the deluxe CrewMax model with a bed size ranging from 6.5 to 8 feet.

In spite of its rugged towing capabilities, the Toyota Tundra offers a comfortable cabin with such options as leather seats and a navigation system. There are plenty of pockets and cubbies to stash stuff away, and the truck features newly designed headrests for exceptional comfort and a nicer look for the vehicle's interior.

Performance

The Tundra has an unusually smooth ride when compared to other vehicles in its class, even in spite of the standard 18-inch wheels (with a 20-inch wheel option that provides an ever smoother ride). Toyota features anti-sway technology that responds to unintended sideways motion to create a safer, smoother ride. As one of the quickest, lithest full-size pickup trucks on the market, it's an attractive option for in-city and off road driving, and performs well under a variety of driving conditions.

Pricing

The Tundra is relatively economical choice among trucks in its class, with 2011 models starting at about $24,000. The downside is that this low price is for the base model only. The base model features a V6 engine as well as two V8 engines that give the light duty pickup a exceptional towing power for a truck of its size. Two wheel drive is standard with the V6 engine, while four-wheel drive is available on the V8 models. All in all, the Tundra is a bargain with a lot of power for the money. On the other hand, purchasers who want a fully loaded model should expect to pay a great deal more. Deluxe models of the Tundra can range all the way to about $47,000.

The bottom line is that the 2011 Toyota Tundra base models pack a powerful punch at a very affordable price. But, for those who want top of the line features like a navigation system, leather interiors, and roomier cabs and truck beds, the price can begin to mount quickly. The Tundra's mediocre fuel economy may be a consideration for some buyers. Overall though, the Tundra is an excellent buy and comes backed by hallmark Toyota reliability. When compared to other trucks in its class, it stands out for quality performance in a relatively economical package.
