Sustainability and Marine Conservation Are Alaska"s Trademarks

20
A recent study produced by the United Nation points to an alarming trend-the world's fisheries are becoming over fished or depleted. More than two thirds of the world's fisheries are fully harvested, on the brink of depletion, or are already depleted. The statistics are quite disquieting. At this rate, scientists predict that the world's oceans will become unviable in about 20 years or less. With the world's fisheries being depleted or threatened due to environmental degradation, loss of fish habitats, pollution, global warming and other factors, people will have to turn to other sources of food.
What too many people don't realize is that water forms a crucial part of the world's ecosystems and that water is a continuum, it is interconnected with all other resources. If we don't care for the world's natural resources, the oceans could be lost forever. This would mean that billions of people would be without a crucial source of food and work.

Unsustainable fishing methods such as bottom trawling which destroys the sea floor making it uninhabitable for a wide array of marine life, bycatch, and overfishing has meant that many fish species are going extinct. Fortunately, it may not be too late. If more fisheries look to Alaska and how that state maintains the fisheries, then perhaps a step forward could be taken to reverse the damage already inflicted.

Alaska is recognized throughout the world as a major force when it comes to sustainability, marine conservation and stewardship and high quality seafood. People know that Alaska has some of the best seafood out there and that it's also leading the way in terms of protecting the environment. Alaska's fishery managers are accredited as being the best in the world. They are incredibly well cared for and managed, so that fishery stocks are plentiful, meaning that everyone, fisherman, fisheries and consumers reap the rewards each year. Alaska's fisheries don't have to worry about depletion. Fisherman's livelihoods aren't at stake. It's a win win situation for all involved. If more of the world's fisheries emulated Alaska, the world's oceans would be in much better shape.
