How to prevent pancreatitis in canines
- 1). Avoid feeding your dog table scraps. Human food tends to be high in fats. Pancreatitis can be caused by a fatty meal that a dog consumes. In addition, it is hard on a dog's stomach and intestines to process fatty foods. Some people will wait to feed their dog its food until dinnertime. That way, it seems like the dog gets to be a part of the family dinner, but it is eating food that is better for it.
- 2). Manage your dog's weight. Even if your dog is not eating fatty foods, it can be overweight. Overweight dogs are more prone to pancreatitis than dogs that are not. If you leave dog food out for your dog all day and it is indulging too much, you may try to limit how much food you put out. If you limit how much your dog should eat a day, you are keeping your dog from overeating and becoming overweight.
- 3). Treat any traumas or infections immediately. Traumas and infections can cause pancreatitis to develop. Dogs who are hit by a car or experience similar traumas should see a veterinarian immediately because pancreatitis can develop as well as myriad other problems. Infections can go on for weeks without showing signs. However, if you suspect your dog may be suffering from any type of infection, it is important to see a veterinarian immediately because infections can cause your dog to be more prone to pancreatitis.
