    • 1). Till the soil and existing plants in the area you will use as your food plot. A rototiller is the ideal tool for this task. Walk through the upturned soil and remove all sticks and leaves that you have uprooted. You should also try to remove as many old plants as you can. Those old plants may compete with the growth of the grains you want to plant.

    • 2). Create a mix of seeds that will thrive in the current growing season your region is experiencing. For example, rye grass and winter wheat grow best in colder conditions while alfalfa and other plants grow best in the summer. Knowing when certain grain seeds grow best will not only save you money and effort but also increase your chances of make a healthy food plot. Mix the seeds you will be spreading over the food plot as thoroughly as possible. You may even want to add a small amount of fresh soil to the seed mix to help coat the seeds and protect them from birds.

    • 3). Spread the seeds over the plot. For smaller plots, you can spread the seeds by hand. For larger plots, tyou may need to spread the seeds using a seed spreader. Run over the food plot with a cultipacker once you have completely spread all of the seeds onto the plot. A cultipacker is a tool that you can use to smooth down the soil and seeds.
