How to Use Coal Tar Shampoo on Dalmatians

27
    • 1). Determine the cause for your dalmatian's condition. Have the dog thoroughly checked by your veterinarian to uncover any underlying problems causing itching or biting. Coal tar shampoo is a powerful topical solution that may not be effective if the dog has an auto-immune disease. Hormone therapy or diet modification might be useful, too.

    • 2). Muzzle the dalmatian before applying the coal shampoo. This breed is highly curious and may try to sample some of the shampoo, which can be toxic. Some coal tar shampoo has herbal or floral perfumes added to the formula to mask the odor of the coal tar extract. This might seem like a treat to the dog.

    • 3). Wear gloves to protect your skin during the application process. If possible, work in a large basin outdoors using buckets of warm water or hose to avoid a mess. Follow the shampoo's directions to ensure you keep it on the fur for enough time for it to penetrate the coat without causing irritation.

    • 4). Perform a patch test to make sure the dalmatian does not have any allergic reaction to the shampoo. Lather from the head to the rear and avoid getting the shampoo into any open wounds. Rinse well and brush the coat after shampooing.
