Types of Cut Flowers
- Roses are one of the best-known cut flowers available. Often associated with love, this classic botanical came into existence over four centuries ago in the Middle East. Today, thousands of growers produce roses in a variety of shapes and colors. These cut blossoms often last between 6 to 12 days and thrive best with an underwater incision (placed at an inch from the bottom of the stem) and with a supply of fresh flower food.
- The Inca or "Peruvian" lily is a South American flower related to the daffodil. These lilies range in colors including white, yellow and red and are now grown internationally. Known for inspiring wealth and prosperity, these blossoms are often used in flower arrangements and as focal areas. Choose flowers that do not have transparent or yellowing leaves, as these are signs of ethylene deterioration. Just place them in a low-fluoride water level solution with flower food so that they last up to 14 days.
- The gay feather, a member of the Compasitae group, is a distinctive flower that blooms downward and means, "I'll try again." These blossoms contain spikes that open up into traditional hues of purple and/or lavender, but can also be found in pink and white shades. Use these prominent, vertical botanicals for contemporary flower arrangements or for drying. Purchase gay feathers that have at least half of the blooms unopened in order to achieve a life span between 7 to 10 days.
- The snapdragon comes from the Mediterranean area and stands for various things including graciousness and deception. These eye-catching flowers, said to look like a dragon's snout, contain stems between 18 to 36 inches and typically hold about 6 to 15 florets. The snapdragon's colors can come in a variety of bright colors, such as purple and yellow, which make them ideal for mixed bouquets. The vase life of this flower depends on the practices of the grower; however, with proper flower food and no indirect light or heat, these plants can live from 5 to 16 days.
- The waxflower (also referred to as the Madagascar jasmine) has origins in Madagascar. This pure white flower is often used in weddings as bouquets and corsages, as it is associated with a joyful marriage. Because these blossoms are delicate in nature, you must be careful in its handling and care so that it lasts a couple of days as a cut flower.
