How to Cut Deer Antlers Off the Head
- 1). Position the deer head to enable a secure grip. Place the saw blade horizontally just above the eye sockets. Cut toward the rear of the skull. Keep cutting until the cut extends beyond the back of the antler bases.
- 2). Place the saw about a half inch to one inch behind the antler bases. Make sure there is clearance between the antlers and the saw to avoid scratching the antlers as you cut. Cut downward at a 90-degree angle to the juncture with the first cut.
- 3). Cut until the skull plate breaks free. Slice any connecting hide with a knife.
- 4). Remove the skull plate from the rest of the head. Scoop out the brain tissue on the skull plate with an old spoon.
- 5). Cut the hide off the skull plate. The hide won’t peel easily, and it will require a lot of cutting. It doesn’t have to come off in one piece or be done carefully if you plan to discard the hide.
- 6). Wrap the lower part of the antlers in aluminum foil. This step will keep them from being discolored while boiling.
- 7). Place the skull plate in an old pot. Boil on a stove or outdoor burner for five minutes to kill germs. Unwrap the foil from the antlers.
