Almost all my life I was thinking skylights was an architectural evidence of homes built in eighties. However, recently when one of my relative was building entire new home he instructed the developer specifically about installation of skylight in his apartment. I was amazed a little but when I visited his house after completion, I was amazed to see the elaborative beauty along with sufficient light depicted by that single skylight. I also have a two-storey building left for me by my father that has two skylights and after looking at those things instinctively, I was in urgent need of skylight replacement to make them more elegant, attractive, beautiful and energy efficient.

Right now, it is a structure made of glass but I cannot call it glass, as it is dome like acrylic structure providing just uniform light all over the home. In my search, I came to know that most of the companies that existed in eighties and involved in manufacturing skylights were no longer in existence. When some consultant from nearby firm dropped in to discuss the issue, he provided me some valuable information about the change in technology, style, size, shape and mechanism of skylight windows. I understood that still there is lot to understand and lot to research.

No a days there is no any acrylic dome instead flat glass is preferred that is a long sheet of glass with double panes wherein gas is filled between the spaces of panes. Instead of filming and glazing argon and krypton is used to make there more energy efficient reducing overall heat transfer. Rather than using aluminum frames having very low thermal resistance now PVC, Vinyl or Fiberglass frames are used. Although this option is quite expensive for skylight, replacement considering the output there is nothing harm in one time investment.

Another amazing technology used in skylight replacement these days is the use of spray foam insulation instead of other options. This insulation is well garnered and designed to fill in and insulate every cavity and nook for zero air penetration. Although I also came across some of the useful tips, e-books and videos for installing and repairing my skylights by myself, I preferred to hire the professional to gain additional warranty provided by them on installation and maintenance.

As of now replacement, skylight come with many options like built in operable blinds, electronic or manual closing and opening of skylight windows. In all the process, I preferred skylights manufactured by Velux Skylight products and I do not think I am going to face any problem, as I am fully confident about ability and capability of skylight replacement windows.
