How to Sew an Artist Smock

    • 1). Measure the width of the shoulders and add 1 inch to this measurement, then measure from the hollow in the neck to just above the knee and add 1 inch to this measurement.

    • 2). Cut a piece of fabric the same size as the measurements taken in step one. For example, if the shoulder width measurement was 19 inches and the measurement between the hollow and knee was 33 inches, you would cut a piece of fabric that measures 20 inches by 34 inches.

    • 3). Place the fabric right side down on your work surface. Find the center of the fabric by dividing both the length and the width of the fabric in half. Make a mark at this point.

    • 4). Take a neck measurement and add 1 inch to this measurement. Draw a circle that is the same size as the neck measurement plus 1 inch around the marked dot. The dot should be in the center of the circle.

    • 5). Cut a line from the center of the circle down the length of one half of the fabric and cut out the rest of the circle. You now have a rectangular piece of fabric with a hole cut out of the center with one half of the fabric split in two.

    • 6). Pin the two halves of the cut pieces of fabric back together with the right sides facing together. Sew 1/2 an inch in from the edge. Leave the 8 inches closest to the neck hole unsewn.

    • 7). Fold the two raw edges on the unsewn 8 inches of the smock over by 1/4 of an inch. Fold them over again by an additional 1/4 of an inch. Pin in place. The raw edges should be tucked inside the fold. Sew 1/3 of an inch from the edge on both pinned edges.

    • 8). Cut five pieces of bias tape. Two pieces should be the same measurement as the width of the smock, two the same length as the smock and the fifth should be the same length as the neck hole.

    • 9). Turn the smock right side up. Sandwich the raw edges of the two shorter ends of the smock with bias tape. Pin the tape in place. Use a running stitch to sew along the inner edge of the bias tape. Sandwich the two longer sides in bias tape and repeat the same process. Sandwich the raw edge around the neck hole with bias tape and repeat the same process.

Cut a 3-inch piece of 1-inch wide ribbon. Cut a 2-inch piece of hook and loop fasteners. Sew one half of the hook and loop fasteners to the first 2 inches of the ribbon. Sew the free 1 inch of the ribbon to one side of the opening at the back of the neck hole. Make sure that the hook and loop fastener side of the ribbon is facing down.

Sew the other half of the hook and loop fasteners onto the other side of the opening at the back of the neck. This should be sewn in a place where the two sides of the fasteners can be pressed together.

Cut four 10-inch pieces of 1/4-inch wide ribbon. Sew two pieces of ribbon on each side of the smock halfway down the length of the smock so that they can be tied together.
