Art Classes for Children That Are Gifted

    Instruction Method

    • Art teachers may give gifted students more independence when it comes to their work. The teacher will start out with a lesson in a particular technique, but then leave students to complete art projects on their own, or in teams. Rather than a direct instruction method, the teacher will provide prompts and guidance to help students learn and figure things out on their own. This type of classroom teaching strategy creates a more challenging experience for students.

    Project Difficulty

    • The art projects that are assigned to gifted students should be more difficult than traditional curriculum, so that students do not fly through the assignments and complete them too quickly. Teachers should focus on the level of project difficulty rather than assigning more and more projects for gifted students to work on. For instance, if standard art classes for the fourth grade are learning about the basics of making clay pottery, art teachers for gifted students should teach the class more advanced methods of sculpting. Gifted students can learn how to use certain sculpting tools, as well as how to make larger-sized pieces.

    Keep Things Competitive

    • One way to maintain the attention and interest of gifted students is to keep things competitive. In your art class, host competitions among students for the best landscape watercolor painting or the best self portrait. When students have contests to enter, they will work more diligently on their art projects, which keeps them engaged in the coursework and prevents boredom.

    Unique Activities

    • Try building some unique activities into your curriculum for gifted students. A field trip to a local art museum is an interactive and interesting way to educate students about artists or genres of art. Another idea is to have a role play week where students become the teachers of the class, and must teach the other students one type of art technique. This activity gives students the chance to become the educators, which can be thrilling for them.

    Student Aide Volunteers

    • Ask your class of gifted students if any of them would like to volunteer as a student aide for other art classes. The student can assist the art teacher by helping to pass out materials to the other students, or guiding the other students as they work on their art projects. This gives gifted students the chance to help others and apply what they already know from their own art classes.
