How to Sew Leather Clothing
- 1). Choose a simple pattern for leather clothing. Look for patterns advertised as easy or beginner projects. Leather won't stretch in the same way as many other fabrics, and small mistakes can make the article of clothing impossible to wear.
- 2). Cut out the pattern pieces and tape them to the right side of the leather with small pieces of masking tape. Don't use pins because they leave holes in the leather.
- 3). Cut the leather along the edges of the pattern pieces with scissors. Remove the paper patterns.
- 4). Equip your sewing machine with a size 11 leather needle. These needles are stronger than standard sewing needles. They won't break as often while you are sewing through leather.
- 5). Thread your sewing machine with all-purpose thread as you would normally.
- 6). Sew the leather pieces together following the directions on the pattern. Don't attempt to stretch the leather or force it through the machine as you work.
- 7). Press seams to one side and apply leather glue to the underside of the seam so that it lies flat. Don't press the seams open even if the pattern instructs you to do so. The seams won't stay open and may form a lump.
