  King County is in the west-central part of the state of Washington and includes the city of Covington, which is in the greater Seattle area. The state of Washington is popular with outdoor enthusiasts because of its mountains, lakes and other natural attractions. King County has more than 25,000 acres of public parklands, including many within easy driving distance of Covington.
  
  

Auburn Narrows Natural Area

• Owned and operated by King County, the Auburn Narrows Natural Area is just east of the town of Auburn, which is about a 10-minute drive southwest of Covington. The park encompasses 107 acres and has trails that wind through habitat restoration projects along the Green River, which is popular with fishermen. The area has meadows, wetlands and channels adjacent to the Green River along with a forest with stands of cottonwood trees. The park is also popular with people who enjoy observing wildlife in a natural setting.

Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park

• The Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park is in Issaquah, which is about 20 miles north of Covington. It is known for its excellent wildlife viewing, including black bears, bobcats and various birds. The park is spread out over 3,115 acres and is connected to the Squak Mountain State Park, which, along with Cougar Mountain, creates a protected area where visitors can hike on 5,000 acres. The trails go through forested areas and offer great views of waterfalls and lakes. Hikers will enjoy the park's diverse physical features, which also include forests, cliffs, caves, streams and wetlands.

Steven Cox Memorial Park

• The Steven Cox Memorial Park is approximately 25 miles northwest of Covington in Seattle. Recreation opportunities at the park include tennis and volleyball courts and a popular walking path. Named after a former King County sheriff, the park also has a community center known as the Log Cabin and hosts various after-school teen programs for ages 12 to 19. Consisting of more than 11 acres, the Steven Cox Memorial Park also has open playing fields, a picnic area and restrooms. Another feature is a baseball field that was renovated in 2008 and now has a turf infield.
