Is Koi Breeding For You?

35
It is unknown as to how many fish there are but we do know that there are over 24,000 different species of fish currently on our planet.
There are small to extremely large fish, ugly and neon fish.
Many fish have been domesticated by mankind, and of these it may well be that the most sought after fish is the Koi.
Koi breeding first began over a thousand years ago in China and breeding now occurs almost everywhere.
Having a Koi pond in your backyard makes your yard not only inviting but relaxing.
If you have a smaller pool and only one or more Koi and want more, you could decide to breed them but beware that fish do lay hundreds of eggs.
In addition, if you are not prepared for the number of young babies you will need to create a safe haven for the babies until you can provide them with good homes.
When the female Koi is ready, she will be more rounded than her usual slender self and her counterpart, the male.
The Koi breeding process is very similar to that of other fish and that initial step is referred to as spawning.
The female fish will lay her eggs and then the male, and it can be more than one, will then fertilize the eggs.
Once the spawning has been completed, then the eggs must be left alone and protected from being eaten or damaged.
Koi breeding begins by choosing the fish with the characteristics that you want for the offspring.
Keep in mind that many of the offspring may not be as colorful or delicately patterned as their parents.
Breeders will selectively reduce the offspring (culling) at a certain age thereby keeping only the Koi that will grow into the fish that are of a higher quality.
Another point that you should keep in mind in Koi breeding is that the male's characteristics are usually more dominant than the females.
You can breed different species of Koi but it is best to breed the same species so that the outcome is that of a higher quality.
The outcome and the characteristics are up to you.
To provide the proper Koi breeding environment, the water should be clean and there should be a place that the female will feel safe to leave her eggs.
You can purchase a product called blanket weed but if you want to retrieve the eggs yourself, you will need to be extremely careful as to not harm the eggs.
The eggs can be removed to a safer environment, if you wish, to keep a more watchful eye over them.
Depending upon what you will do with the fry, the babies that are rapidly growing will determine the culling process.
Choosing the Koi that you will keep and the Koi that don't meet the standards you are looking for.
The culling process may start at about the age of 4 weeks but can even be done during the age of 6-8 weeks of age.
The process of Koi breeding can be time consuming but if you are breeding for an income, with the proper knowledge and tools and of course high quality specimens to be mated, you are sure to be successful in your endeavors.
