Itchy Dog Home Remedies - Do They Work?

26
Calendula and Thyme is claimed to be good for skin infections.
This is not true.
Bacteria are not susceptible to these herbs.
One breeder I found on the internet also claimed that Thyme was used for skin parasites such as scabies and Demodex.
This is ridiculous.
Calendula and Thyme extracts do not fight bacterial infection or kill skin that cause skin problems in dogs.
It is claimed that "to take advantage of these herbs (calendula and thyme)you can make a strong tea with a calendula or thyme tea bag.
Use 2 tea bags for one cup water.
When it cools you can either put it in a spray bottle to spray directly onto the problem areas, or you can put the tea into your dog shampoo and use it as a rinse.
" This is fantasy and simply not true.
The same dog breeder claimed that "If your dog's skin is flaky and appears dry, instead of using the herbs above you can try olive oil.
Dogs with dry itchy skin may not be getting the essential oils they need to condition their skin.
" This is another example of epic ignorance and the misinformation propagated to innocent consumers on the internet.
Dogs that have dry skin have a barrier defect on the skin.
This won't be addressed by supplementing a teaspoon of olive oil.
Another dog breeder suggested "Fish oil is also a good choice for giving your dog healthy skin.
I give my dog a fish oil capsule once a day, as well as some olive oil in her food.
Both olive oil and fish oil will help with dry skin.
" Neither of these oils help with dry skin.
Fish oil has some natural anti inflammatory effects and can actually be useful.
You need to know the correct dose rate for it to be of any benefit.
One capsule doesn't do anything.
There are home remedies that can help.
Evidence based medicine has been carried out on many substances and some can be very useful indeed.
You need to know what to use, the correct amount and the dose rate.
