How to Treat for Fleas in an Apartment Building

32
    • 1). Take care of your animals first. Give your dog or cat two or three baths in flea and tick shampoo. This will kill any fleas on your pet's body and make its skin repel the pesky bugs. Put a flea and tick collar on your pet's neck. If you're more into natural remedies, squirting lemon juice on your pet and rubbing it on its neck and behind its ears can repel fleas as well.

You can also use a flea treatment such as Frontline or Advantage. These will kill existing fleas and keep fleas away from your pet for about a month.

    • 2). Prepare to vacate your apartment for a day or two. Before you leave, make sure any pets are with you. Set out a "bug bomb" that kills fleas in each room. For larger rooms, such as open kitchen-breakfast room layouts, you may need two bombs. Check the instructions for coverage area. Activate the bombs right before you leave.

    • 3). Return after 24 hours. Spread some boric acid on carpets to kill eggs that may still be there. Put pillows and stuffed toys in the dryer and run it for 30 minutes to kill eggs nesting there. Wash and dry all linens, and wash all dishes in your cupboards to get the pesticide off.

    • 4). Spray a barrier insecticide around all windows and doors in your apartment. This spray goes along the edge of all openings and is generally clear and odorless. If you apply it once a season, bugs should stay out of your place.
