How to Back Up Your File Encryption Certificate & Key

    • 1). Click "Start."

    • 2). Type "certmgr.msc" into the the "Search" box.

    • 3). Press "Enter."

    • 4). Expand the "Personal" folder, then click "Certificates."

    • 5). Click the certificate that displays "Encrypting File System" under "Intended Purposes." If more than one certificate exists, back up all certificates.

    • 6). Select the "Action" menu, select "All Tasks," then select "Export."

    • 7). Click "Next." Select "Yes, Export the Private Key." Click "Next."

    • 8). Select "Personal Information Exchange," then click "Next."

    • 9). Type a desired password. Click "Next."

      Enter the desired name for the file certificate. Click "Finish."
