Organization Tools for the Home
- According to an Esselte survey published in the Boston Globe, approximately 43 percent of Americans call themselves disorganized. As many as 1.4 million Americans may have compulsive disorder syndrome, better known as "hoarding," which is a compulsion to keep items even if you don't need them. You can combat both of these behaviors by buying organizational tools for the home.
- One area of the home that is prone to becoming disorganized is the closet. It's common to throw items in your closet when you're in a rush, which is why a closet organization system is a helpful addition to your home. These systems contain well-defined sections for your shirts, pants, robes, belts, and ties. You can insert the organizer directly into the closet (remove the current pole and shelves first) or place the closet organizer in another area of your room to double your closet space.
- If you have a large number of shoes, one small section in your closet (such as the floor or top shelf) is not going to accommodate them all. Shoes strewn around your room or closet is a common source of disorganization in a bedroom. A shoe organizer gives you a very specific area to store your shoes for quick access. There are three main types of shoe organizers---units that hang from your closet door, organizers that sit on the floor and storage units that slide under your bed.
- If you have a home office or a set of drawers that tend to become crowded and junky with random items, you need a drawer organizer (sometimes called a "junk drawer" organizer). This organizational tool slides into your drawer and sections it off into clear segments where you can add your items, including pens, tape, staples, and other office supplies. You can also purchase a drawer organizer for your kitchen to section off your utensils. If you find that you have an item that you can't comfortable fit or classify into one of the sections of your desk organizer, it just might not belong in that drawer.
- Physical organizers aren't the only organizational tools needed in the home---it's also important to organize your family's schedule. You can do so with an online calendar tool. Google has a free calendar or you can subscribe to an online service (see "Resources" for an example). These tools allow you to add events and regular schedules for each family member to one calendar then grant access to each person in the family. This organizational tools helps you to avoid scheduling conflicts between family members and plan family outings more efficiently.
