How to Block Bearshare
- 1). Click "Start." Type "User Accounts" in Search, and press "Enter." This opens a window on your screen.
- 2). Click the blue "Manage another Account" link located near the bottom. This opens a new window containing all Windows user accounts. Double-click to select the Windows account you want to block from using BearShare. This opens a screen containing multiple options for the account.
- 3). Click the "Change the Account Type" option, then click the radio button next to "Administrator." Click the "Change Account Type" button to apply. This changes their account to an administrator. This temporary process will allow you to make the necessary changes more easily while logged on to the user account. Once you have finished blocking BearShare, go back to the "Change the Account Type" option and click the radio button next to "Standard User" to change their account back to the way it was.
- 4). Click "Start," and click the arrow next to "Shut Down." This opens a context menu with a list of options. Click "Log off" to log out of your Windows account. This takes you to the Windows logon screen. Log on to Windows with the user account you want blocked from BearShare. Logging on to their account instead of your own allows you to make the account-specific changes necessary to block the program.
- 1). Click "Start." Type "Firewall" in Search, and press "Enter." This opens a "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" window.
- 2). Click the "Inbound Rules" option on the left pane. This brings up a list of programs and services sorted alphabetically at the center of the window.
- 3). Locate the four "BearShare" entries at the top of the window. Right-click each one separately, and click "Properties." This opens a properties dialog window.
- 4). Click the "General" tab, then select the "Block the Connection" option. Click the "Apply" button, and the "OK" button. The Windows Firewall now blocks all traffic to the BearShare application.
- 1). Open a Run dialog by pressing "Windows" and "R" simultaneously. Type "Regedit," then press "Enter." This runs the Windows Registry Editor.
- 2). Locate and open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Policies\Explorer" registry key.
- 3). Right-click the "Explorer" key. Click "New," then click "DWORD Value." This creates an item on the right pane called "New Value #1." Right-click this new entry, and click "Rename." Change the name to "DisallowRun."
- 4). Double-click the new "DisallowRun" value. This opens an Edit DWORD window. Replace the "0" located in the "Value data" field to "1," and click "OK."
- 5). Right-click the "Explorer" key again, and click "New," then click "Key." This creates a new subkey below Explorer called "New Key #1." Right-click this new key, and click "Rename." Change the name to "DisallowRun."
- 6). Right-click "DisallowRun." Click "New," then click "DWORD Value." This creates a "New Value #1" entry on the right pane. Right-click "New Value #," and click "Rename." Change the name to "1." Right-click "1," and click "Edit." This opens an Edit DWORD menu dialog. Type "BearShare.exe" in the "Value Data" box, and click the "OK" button.
- 7). Close the Registry Editor, and log off the current user. The next time the user tries to open BearShare, he will be prompted with a dialog advising his administrator canceled the operation. Combining this with the rules implemented within the Windows Firewall sufficiently blocks the user from running BearShare on your computer.
